I mentioned in my post yesterday about teaching my li’l girl the Philippine National Anthem. I first search for the lyrics from Wikipedia so, I could print it out for my girl to see. Oh, of course I still remember our national anthem, but I just want to make sure of the spelling of some words. ;)

Then, I let her listen to the beat from the audio file in the Wikipedia. It was only then I remembered of searching for videos from Youtube. I remember when I was still younger that before the last full show, a video of the Philippine national anthem will be shown and in which everyone is required to stand up. I was searching for something like that when I found the video below.

Oh, I had goosebumps while watching the video. It was nicely done and I’m amazed as to how they were able to fit in all the country’s important events in 2 minutes. While it was shown, I have a little bit of history lessons for my girl. So, it was like she just had a 2 minute dose of Philippine history. :)

I will sure be adding Philippine history as a subject once she’s about 8-9 years old. It wouldn’t be too late then, right?

I’m now teaching our li’l girl the Philippine National Anthem. Since we are a cross cultural family in a cross cultural setting, I need to slowly let her learn a few things from my country (Philippines), my Hubby’s country ( Malaysia) and our resident country ( Thailand). So, with any biases, I’m letting her learn my national anthem first. ;)

I know it won’t be an easy task for her since our National Anthem will be in Filipino, a language which she hasn’t learn yet. So, my plan is to let her memorize 2 stanzas per session. I hope this will work and she will be able to sing ‘Lupang Hinirang’ in no time. Mabuhay Pilipinas!! :) )

I was doing the Book of Time with my 6 year old daughter today. The Book of Time is actually just a Timeline in which we stick all the images of different events, people and places on each specific year or period. Doing this, the kids will somehow have a visual picture of the ‘entire’ history which I believe allows them to relate each character or events better and remembers them more easily.

We were actually not very up-to-date with our Book of Time. We were supposed to stick each character or event as we read them in my daughter’s History books, but then I find it quite disruptive to pause for awhile just to ‘stick’ a single character in the book. I feel like our ‘reading momentum’ falls every time we do this. That’s why I always procastinate in doing the Book of Time.

As a result, we were so far behind it that we had to ‘stick’ a lot of events and people today all in one shot. So today was that day of ‘sticking’ and it was also good because I was able to review and check whether my daughter still remembers our previous lessons.

So, I started my asking my daughter about what she remembers about “Ancient Egypt”, one of our first lessons. My daughter was able to remember a lot of details about this period. I was also browsing her history book and trying to check what she’s saying, as I myself has already forgotten some things. But I was taken aback when my daughter told me about how the Egyptian women ‘mourn’ when their cat died. I was right on that page when she told me the whole paragraph from the book ‘verbatim’. Really! I mean, Ancient Egypt was like week 3 in our curriculum and we’re currently in week 14 but she still remembers that.

As I went on with our review with Ancient Romans, the Vikings and etc, I was more amazed as she really did remember most of the things we studied even the small details. Wow! I guess my daughter has really taken so much interest in History. It must be also because of the great books which we are using that are simple, colorful and full of facts that are easy to understand for the kids.

Fridays are my daughter’s most awaited day. It’s her experiment day for her homeschool. She’s really enjoying all the hands on experience she’s getting from her science program.

Today, she made her own play dough that’s made of flour. We were supposed to make bread but I overlooked the yeast. I was sure to have one but somehow I couldn’t find it in my cupboard.

Anyways, I also find her experiments very helpful to help her fully understand the concepts that she studies in her science book.
